Dr. Kent W. Washington was born in Columbia, where he attended Waverly Elementary School, W.A. Perry, Alcorn, and finished at Dreher High School. He went on to South Carolina State University before entering Howard University College of Dentistry.
After dental school, Dr. Washington was selected for a general practice residency program at Saint Elizabeths Hospital, where he underwent extensive training in oral surgery and anesthesiology at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. Upon completion of his residency program, he was appointed to the faculty of Howard University College of Dentistry where he was an instructor in the restorative and pediatric dentistry departments. In 1989, Dr. Washington completed his orthodontic specialty training and immediately returned to the faculty as an assistant professor in orthodontics.
Dr. Washington is a member of numerous professional associations, including:

- Southern Association of Orthodontists
- South Carolina Orthodontic Association
- Senior Member of the Craniofacial Team for Cleft Palette Cases
In 1992, Dr. Washington successfully completed his orthodontic specialty board in the State of South Carolina and returned to his native Columbia to practice the specialty of orthodontics for children and adults. Dr. Washington has been practicing orthodontics in South Carolina for almost two decades and has been in private practice at his current location since 2000.
